5 Best detox foods for weight loss

It’s hard to achieve all your health goals with one diet. Oftentimes, you’d have to sacrifice one thing for another as you curate which foods to include in your plan.

But if you wish to detox your body while trying to lose weight, you’re in luck. Detoxification is compatible with slimming down. In fact, several foods not only aid in shedding weight but also help remove toxins from the body.

Foods and drinks that detoxify and promote weight loss

Here are five detox foods and drinks for weight loss:

Tea

What better way to detoxify your body while trying to lose some pounds than by drinking a cup of tea? You see, tea leaves contain polyphenols that help detoxify the body and fight harmful free radicals that can contribute to diseases like cancer and heart disease over time. Studies also show that a type of polyphenols in green tea called catechins enhances the amount of fat you burn during exercise.

Additionally, detox teas have a laxative effect that helps keep food moving along your digestive tract. This can give your abdomen a slimmer, flatter look on top of cleansing your colon.

Cabbage

Cabbage is a natural diuretic that helps expel toxin-bearing fluids and promote weight loss. As you pass urine more often, you lose what’s known as “water weight” – extra water being held in your body, which can cause bloating and puffiness in the abdomen, legs and arms.

Like other cruciferous vegetables, cabbage is also an excellent source of sulfur. One of the most abundant minerals in the body, sulfur helps get rid of harmful free radicals and aids your liver in breaking down toxins so they can be expelled more easily.

Additionally, cabbage is rich in dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals that promote good overall health. And get this: A cup of cabbage contains only 17 calories. By comparison, a cup of cooked oats contains nearly 160 calories.

Garlic

Garlic might just take the cake when it comes to detoxifying superfoods. Thanks to its rich sulfur content, it helps protect against organ damage caused by heavy metal toxicity. A study of people exposed to high levels of lead found that high-dose garlic supplements helped reduce blood lead levels by nearly 20 percent. It also reduced clinical signs of toxicity, including headaches and increased blood pressure while causing fewer side effects than the common medication used for heavy metal poisoning.

Studies also show that allicin, one of the major sulfur-containing compounds in crushed garlic, helps fight obesity and related metabolic disorders by activating brown fat. Brown fat is a special type of body fat known to burn calories whenever we get cold. As it turns out, garlic’s sulfur-rich compounds can also jumpstart this calorie-burning process.

On top of these benefits, garlic also helps lower bad cholesterol, prevent cardiovascular disease and reduce stress. Don’t set this powerful superfood aside just because it makes your breath smell bad. You wouldn’t want to miss out on garlic’s many health benefits.

Leafy greens

Leafy greens have just about everything you can want from a food — and this is all thanks to compounds that help fight cancer, keep the heart healthy, preserve memory, stave off inflammation and make you look younger.

So it wouldn’t come as a surprise that leafy greens are also terrific detox and weight loss foods. These green veggies are low in carbs and calories but boast loads of fiber. The chlorophyll in leafy greens also cleanses the blood, reduces your blood lipid levels, lowers blood pressure and supports your liver’s ability to eliminate toxins.

Water

Though technically not food, water is just as important as the food we chew. More than half of your body is made of water. And while you can last for weeks without food, you cannot survive more than three days without water.

Besides hydrating your body, water also aids in detoxification and weight loss. It helps flush toxins out of your kidney and liver and suppress your appetite when consumed before meals. Plus, it’s calorie-free and refreshing.

Not all of our health goals are compatible with each other, which makes curating the perfect diet seem like a pie in the sky. But people who want to start detoxing at the same time are in luck – they have at their disposal several superfoods that promote weight loss and detoxify.
