11 Inexpensive home remedies that work

Home remedies are all-natural and low-cost cures for a host of ailments including colds, constipation, allergic reactions, inflammation and even wounds.

When you have home remedies on hand, which you can stockpile at very little expense, you are well-equipped to deal with ailments quickly, safely and effectively. Designate a kitchen shelf or an entire pantry to store the following home remedies.

Ginger

Ginger has powerful anti-inflammatory compounds that provide instant relief for nasal congestion. You can also use it to treat sore throat and stomachaches. Add crushed ginger to herbal tea or boil the root itself and drink the water once it cools.

Olives

Olives contain plant compounds known as tannins that can prevent nausea caused by motion sickness or pregnancy. When you feel nauseous, the mouth produces excess saliva in anticipation of bile to protect delicate tooth enamel. Olives can dry the mouth and minimize the nauseous sensation. The bitter flavor of the olives can also calm the stomach.

Peppermint

Menthol, the main active compound in peppermint leaves, acts as a natural antihistamine. As such, peppermint can relieve nasal congestion, sore throat and allergic reactions. Its anti-inflammatory properties can also restore digestive health and treat constipation.

Dandelion

You won’t find weeds in the kitchen, but dandelions grow just about anywhere regardless of soil conditions, so you’re likely to find one on the lawn or along the sidewalk. Despite its status as a weed, the dandelion is full of antioxidants that support digestion. As a natural diuretic, it can also rid the body of toxins and harmful substances.

Honey

Raw honey is an excellent home remedy for burns, scrapes and bug bites. It has antibacterial properties that can prevent infection. To relieve wounds, dab a small amount on the affected area and leave it on for at least 30 minutes.

Baking soda

Baking soda is the crystallized form of sodium bicarbonate, a natural antacid that can be used to treat heartburn or acid reflux. Baking soda is commonly used as a cleaning agent to get rid of stains and grime, but it can also be used to treat bee stings and rashes. Simply create a paste by mixing equal parts of baking soda and water and apply it onto the affected area to reduce itchiness. You can also use the paste to naturally whiten teeth.

Apple cider vinegar

As a popular go-to remedy, apple cider vinegar can treat a wide range of ailments including sore throat, indigestion and arthritis. Its antioxidants also work to reduce cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Cornstarch

Cornstarch, a flavorless carbohydrate extract, is commonly used as a thickening agent for marinades and sauces. But you can also use it as dry shampoo. Sprinkle cornstarch on the scalp and rub it in to eliminate excess oil and sweet. Use it as an instant fix to treat dull and greasy hair.

Garlic

Garlic acts as a natural antiseptic thanks to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. Snack on raw garlic to eliminate toothache, prevent oral infections and restore digestive health.

Essential oils

Essential oils like tea tree, lavender and eucalyptus can relieve inflammation and itchiness caused by bug bites and rashes. You can also add a few drops of essential oils to warm water and inhale the aroma to minimize stress and relieve anxiety.

Coconut oil

If you have yellow teeth, gargle with coconut oil to reduce plaque and prevent bacterial growth. It can also prevent dental caries and periodontitis (gum disease).

Kitchen staples and natural cleaning agents can double as effective home remedies for various ailments like colds, inflammation and digestive problems. Organic ingredients are the key to potent remedies, so be sure to use natural products as much as possible and avoid processed or filtered variants.
