9 Effective home remedies for tonsillitis

The tonsils are lymph nodes located on each side of the back of the throat. They play an important role in protecting the body from pathogens that may enter through the mouth.

Tonsillitis occurs when the tonsils become inflamed due to a viral or bacterial infection. It is prevalent in children, but it can occur in adults as well. Common signs and symptoms of tonsillitis include sore throat, difficulty swallowing and fever.

The following are potent natural remedies that can easily relieve symptoms of tonsillitis.

Water

If you start to notice a dry cough or a sore throat, drink plenty of lukewarm water. Water can relieve the dryness and itchiness of the throat. It also soothes the tonsils.

Saltwater

Salt has antibacterial properties that can neutralize bacteria. You can try gargling with a saltwater mixture to soothe inflamed tonsils, relieve a scratchy throat and lessen the number of bacteria present in the mouth. To make a saltwater mixture, simply dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water. Gargle with saltwater for a few seconds before spitting it out. Do not swallow the mixture, as this can irritate the throat and trigger coughing. Gargle as often as necessary.

Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a popular home remedy for various ailments due to its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. It is commonly used to reduce cholesterol, lower blood sugar levels and kill harmful bacteria. To relieve symptoms of tonsillitis, add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to a cup of warm water. Gargle the solution as often as necessary.

Chamomile

Many herbal teas, such as chamomile, are naturally rich in antioxidants that can relieve inflammation and inhibit the growth of bacteria. It can also induce sleep and relaxation, which can be beneficial if your tonsillitis is accompanied by chills or a fever.

Turmeric

Turmeric contains active plant compounds that possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Not only can turmeric neutralize disease-causing pathogens, but it can also greatly reduce swelling. To treat tonsillitis, add a teaspoon of turmeric powder to a cup of water or tea and drink the solution before going to bed.

Basil

Basil is also a potent natural remedy for tonsillitis due to the number of antioxidants it contains. It is commonly used to relieve fever, headaches, sore throats and cough. To unlock its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, boil 12 to 15 basil leaves for 10 minutes. Afterward, strain the solution and let it cool. Drink this juice to instantly relieve a sore throat.

Lemon

Lemon is an excellent source of vitamin C, which plays an essential role in boosting the immune system. It also has antioxidants that fight bacteria and relieve inflammation. Drink pure, unsweetened lemon juice twice a day to treat tonsillitis.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is also loaded with antioxidants that inhibit the growth and spread of bacteria. It can also reduce swelling and accelerate the body’s healing process. To treat tonsillitis, add a stick of cinnamon or a teaspoon of cinnamon powder to an herbal tea of your choice. Drink this at least twice a day.

Beetroot

Beetroot contains high amounts of essential vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, folate, potassium and manganese, that fortify the immune system. Beetroot can be enjoyed raw, blanched or roasted.

Tonsillitis is a common minor ailment that affects both children and adults. It typically heals within a few days, but home remedies can significantly relieve its symptoms.
