Get more out of your green juice by adding these 5 vegetables to the mix

Juicing is a quick and easy way to boost your nutrient intake. You don’t even need an expensive juicer to make green juice – a quality blender will work just as well.

To get you started on making your own energy-boosting juice, here are five of the best superfoods to use.

Beets

Beets are potent, so if you’re new to juicing use only a small amount of fresh beet juice. Try using half a regular-sized beet for your first drink and gradually work up to a whole one beet as your body gets used to beets.

Beetroots, which are deep red beets, are a natural detoxifier for your liver. Beets are rich in betaine, a substance that reduces fatty deposits in your liver and boosts heart health.

Carrots

Drinking carrot juice keeps your eyes and skin healthy. Carrots are full of beta-carotene, making it a good source of pro-vitamin A.

Additionally, carrots contain carotenoids like alpha-carotene with anti-cancer properties. Carrots also contain vitamins B, C and K, along with calcium, copper, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, phosphorus and potassium.

Celery

Fresh celery juice is good for your blood pressure and heart. The vegetable minimizes inflammation, detoxifies and protects your cells against cancer.

Cucumber

Cumber juice promotes kidney health. Drinking large amounts of cucumber juice also helps dissolve kidney stones.

Kale

Kale, one of the most popular superfoods, is well-loved for a reason. It is rich in pro-vitamin A and vitamins B, C and K. This leafy green is also a great source of minerals like calcium, copper, manganese and potassium.

Studies have found that kale juice has a high concentration of organosulfur compounds that may have anti-carcinogenic effects. This means drinking kale juice can help your body fight breast, colon, ovarian and stomach cancer.

Green juice recipe

You don’t have to use all five of the above-mentioned veggies all at once in your green juice. You can even enjoy them on their own if you’re not ready to consume too many ingredients in one go.

However, it is best to use several veggies (and fruits) to make green juice. This ensures that you get as many nutrients in one drink as you can.

Try the green juice recipe below, which includes celery, cucumber and kale.

 Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 1 bunch curly kale, roughly chopped
  • 1 large lemon, peeled and quartered
  • 1 inch ginger, peeled
  • 1 large cucumber, cut into long strips
  • 2 large Granny Smith apples, cored and sliced
  • 4 whole celery stalks

Preparation:

  1. Wash and prep the ingredients.
  2. Juice the fruits and veggies. Follow the order listed above.
  3. If you don’t like pulpy beverages, strain the juice using a sieve.
  4. Serve immediately.

Give this recipe above your own delicious twist by substituting some of the ingredients with your favorite organic fruits and veggies!
