Research has found that fermented garlic extract can help fight obesity. The study, which was published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, looked at the anti-obesity effects of garlic extract fermented by lactic acid bacteria on obesity.
- For the study, researchers at Korea University fed mice with a high-fat diet to cause obesity.
- Then, the team orally gave the mice with 250 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) or 500 mg/kg of the fermented garlic extract.
- The intervention period lasted for eight weeks.
- The results revealed that feeding mice with 250 and 500 mg/kg fermented garlic extract reduced body weight by 14 percent and 18 percent, respectively.
- The fermented garlic extract also reduced lower epididymal, retroperitoneal, and mesenteric adipose tissue mass by 36 percent, 44 percent, and 63 percent, respectively.
- In addition, the treatment significantly decreased the levels of triglyceride and total cholesterol.
- It also suppressed adipogenesis.
- These results suggested that fermented garlic extract has anti-obesity effects.
Based on these findings, the researchers concluded that consuming fermented garlic extract can help fight diet-induced obesity.
