The Java plum lowers blood sugar levels in diabetics

Researchers from Afe Babalola University and Ibrahim Babaginda University were able to provide further evidence of the antidiabetic properties of java plum (Syzygium cumini) by evaluating its anti-hyperglycemic and anti-inflammatory activities. Their study, which was published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine, made use of in vivo experiments to investigate these properties.

  • There are over 415 million people with diabetes mellitus, whose pathogenesis has been associated with oxidative stress and inflammation.
  • Patients with diabetes exhibit high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) brought about either by problems with insulin production or insulin resistance.
  • Previous studies have shown that java plum has antidiabetic properties. However, its anti-hyperglycemic and anti-inflammatory activities have not been evaluated.
  • For the in vivo studies, 40 female Wistar rats with alloxan-induced diabetes were used.
  • Phenolic java plum treatments, as well as those for the negative and positive control, were orally administered. The treatment for negative control was distilled water, while for positive it was metformin.
  • After 14 days of the treatments, the rats were sacrificed to determine anti-hyperglycemic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities.

The results were able to provide further insight into the antidiabetic activity of java plum. Researchers revealed that the java plum works by reducing blood sugar, increasing antioxidant activity, and reducing inflammation.
