The “dirty dozen” refers to the 12 foods most commonly contaminated by pesticides and other chemicals. Often, they are fruits or vegetables that don’t typically have the skin removed before consumption, like peaches or nectarines. They can also have thin skin, like cucumbers, that can easily be penetrated by chemicals.

Most people don’t wash their fruits and vegetables long enough or well enough to rid them of pesticides — and if they’ve been absorbed into the flesh of the fruit, there’s really no turning back.
